The Future of Music Creation: AI’s Role in Innovation
A.I. music is getting good. I mean, like, really good. To the point where it’s getting to be disheartening. For context, I wrote some lyrics that I wanted Udio and Suno to turn into a song. So, I plugged in my lyrics, and the results were pretty impressive.
AI Remixes: Surpassing Expectations
Udio has this feature where they can extend and remix your song, generating its own lyrics to fit what you’ve already written. And when I did that, the results were stellar. Much better than the stuff I had written. I know the point is to make the best possible song, but at the same time, I would like to think that I put work into crafting these lyrics and they worked in my head, so they’re going to work in a song. But all it took these AI song generators was just a prompt, and just like that, they came up with something better.
The Changing Landscape
I know you’re probably sick of hearing it, but this may be the future of creativity. I can imagine a situation where people will just have a library of music, shows, games that they’ve created, and that they can just post on some social media site. People can upload it, play it, listen to it, etc., and that, in a sense, would become our new social currency. This assumes we get to a point of post-labor, right?
Handcrafted vs. Mass-Produced
I saw a post on YouTube the other day, and the commenter said, “You know, we’re going to get to the point where music made by real people is going to be like handcrafted furniture.” And that, to me, is the perfect analogy. Ikea makes some really cool stuff, and a lot of people like Ikea. But there’s something cool and different about having a one-of-one handcrafted piece of furniture.
Excitement Amidst Disheartenment
Now, as I mentioned, it’s disheartening that my lyrics weren’t as good as I thought they were. But at the same time, I’m excited because with tools like this, you can take one aspect of creation. So say you only know how to write, or you only know how to sing or act, or whatever it is that you do well. Now, you can create full works of art and have the other pieces filled in for you by AI. That, to me, is a godsend because right now, there are a lot of ideas that never get made or just never get executed properly because of budget, resources, etc. The way things are going, in 20 years, you will be able to execute an idea without the friction of the creative process as it exists today.
Exploring AI Music Tools
If you don’t believe me, you can try these AI generation music tools for yourself. Suno or Udio seem to be the most popular, but I’m sure others will pop up. And again, we’re in the early stages of this, but it’s still very, very good. If you want to check out another article about AI and how it could change things for the better, click here.
